My name is Junzhu Zhang. My favorite medium is Painting. I began to paint and draw even before I was 3 years old. Out of all the media in Visual Arts, I find I still love painting the best! I think painting is the straightest way to express my ideas and emotion. I always feel comfortable, free, and joyful when I am painting. I enjoy it very much. I was born in Beijing, China. I don't think my parents are like the other normal Chinese parents, because in my memory they never pushed me in studying the academic courses at my schools. Instead, we traveled to a lot of different countries in the world, approximately 20 countries so far. My mother always supports me in my fine art training- which is my favorite thing to do after school. My parents manage the first private Rhythmic Music School in mainland China. Some Chinese call it the first Rock 'n' Roll Music School, but my father often told me actually Blues, Jazz, and Rock music are the 3 main styles taught in his school. They also organized the first outdoor music festival in mainland China. I was expected to be trained more in music than fine art by my father. Although I also like music, he gave up on me being a musician when he realized that the Visual Arts field might be my mission in my life.
My family has many pets- First there was Mimi, an abandoned kitten, my mother found screaming on the ground many years ago and brought her home. And then Mimi’s kitten "Yuan Yuan" after one year. Two years later my mother rescued an injured blue parrot on the street, she named him "Lan Lan", it's the Chinese pronunciation for ”Blue". Those pets are older than me, so they were already in our home when I was born. When I was 9 years old my mother brought home an abandoned big guy "Chow Chow" dog. He's quite smart and his appearance liked a bear very very much, so we named him "Xiao Xiong" because it means "small bear".
I came to OCSA because I only wanted to attend an excellent art high school, so my family moved to Southern California from Seattle for me to attend OCSA. Thanks very much to my parents!
